Charity Walk Raises £6,000 for Maggie’s Newcastle

Colleagues from JTC Furniture Group joined partners and friends from across the housing and construction sector to raise an incredible £6,000 for Maggies Newcastle following a 13-mile charity walk along the Northumberland coastline.

The walk took place on Tuesday 28 April, with participants setting off from the iconic Bamburgh Castle before making their way along the coast to Dunstanburgh Castle, taking in some of the region’s most breathtaking scenery along the route.

A total of 26 people took part in the challenge, including colleagues from Prosper, JTC Furniture Group, believe housing, 0800 Repair, RE:GEN North East and North Yorkshire Council.

The event also saw colleagues from the wider Woodland Furniture Group team in Northern Ireland travel over specially to take part, including Connor McCloskey and Sarah-Jane Knox, highlighting the shared support across the wider business for the charity and fundraising effort.

Originally aiming to raise £3,000, the group almost doubled their target, with donations continuing to come in following the event.

The charity was chosen by colleagues whose families have been directly impacted by cancer and who have personally experienced the support provided by Maggie’s. The walk was organised as an opportunity to give something back to a charity that continues to support thousands of individuals and families across the UK.

Founded in 1996, Maggie’s provides free psychological, emotional and practical support for people living with cancer, as well as their families and friends. The Maggie's Newcastle centre has now been supporting people across the North East for more than 13 years and relies heavily on fundraising and donations to continue providing its services.

Rebecca Griggs, Head of Procurement at Prosper, said:

“It was such a great day and I am pleased we have been able to raise so much money for such a brilliant cause. Maggie’s Newcastle is very close to me and my family so it’s even more fulfilling that I feel we are giving back to them. I was worried when we started in Bamburgh as the weather was wet and cold but it soon brightened up and by the time we arrived at Dunstanburgh, the sun was shining and it was lovely blue sky. We all ended up in Craster afterwards for a refreshing drink to celebrate our achievements. We chatted along the way and there is plenty of support to possibly organise another walk or charity event later in the year.”

Colin Tweddell, Executive Director – Social Housing at JTC Furniture Group, added:

“Maggie’s is a charity that is very close to my heart, so being able to support the incredible work they do made this challenge particularly meaningful for me personally. What stood out most throughout the walk was the way everyone came together. Colleagues from JTC, the wider WFG team in Northern Ireland, partners and friends all supported one another from start to finish, and there was a real sense of togetherness across the day. I’m incredibly proud of everyone involved, not just for completing the walk, but for helping raise such an important amount of money for a charity that provides vital support to people and families when they need it most.”

As Maggie’s celebrates its 30th year, the charity continues to expand its support network across the UK and internationally, helping people find practical and emotional support during some of life’s most difficult moments.
